The H1N1 Influenza epidemic

Since August 15 there has been 3 deaths related to the H1N1 Influenza in Okinawa, Kobe, and Nagoya.

On Friday August 21, The National Institute of Infectious Diseases announced the H1N1 "swine flu" as an epidemic.

In Kochi Prefecture, there has been 11 cases reported as of August 18 and it is expected to rise.

The Prefecture has put in place measures to control outbreaks in medical institutions and is equipped with Influenza medication.

We continue to urge residents to be vigilant to prevent the spread of disease in the following ways:

(1) to prevent infection
-wash hands and gargle frequently
-wear a mask and avoid large crowds

(2) to prevent spread
-do not cough or sneeze into open air
-if symptoms arise wear a mask
-stay indoors and avoid large crowds
-if you develop a fever, visit the doctor and wear a mask

Extra care is advised for those who are in higher risk categories such as people with respiratory illness or heart disease, pregnant women and small children.

The Prefecture is eager to provide its residents with the newest information regarding this disease, and is urging individuals to be careful with their health and hygiene. Please stay calm and take care in the upcoming months.
