Kochi City is home to Japan’s oldest outdoor marketplace. Opened in 1690, the Sunday Market has continued ever since. Starting at Otemon Gate, the entrance to Kochi Castle, it winds its way for 1km along Otesuji Avenue. Around 500 stores sell Kochi’s varied products, all at bargain prices. But get in early, as the best deals and the freshest produce sell out in the morning.
Sunday market has proven so popular that similar outdoor markets have sprung up on other days. Now we boast markets on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays as well.
From Kochi Station take a tram to Hasuike-cho Dori (2nd stop) and walk along the palm-lined street you can see on your right (west). Sunday market extends all the way to Kochi Castle along this street.
