1. Kochi Gillberg Neuropsychiatry Centre
Kochi Gillberg Neuropsychiatry Centre was founded in April 2012 with the cooperation of Professor Christopher Gillberg, Gothenburg University, Sweden.
He is a global authority in the field of child psychiatry.
To train specialized doctors and to expand the support for developmental disorders in Kochi, we research and educate clinically on neurodevelopmental disorders under the instruction and cooperation of Prof. Christopher Gillberg.
2. Our projects
Our research ranges overall child psychiatry as also Prof. Gillberg. We do collaboration research, case conferences, and exchange information with Kochi University and Kochi Health Sciences Center, etc. KGNC members are composed of specialists including psychiatrists, pediatricians, educators, psychologists, Speech Language Pathologists, and physical therapists.
1) Training
We improve our specialization by holding seminars for the understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders including “ESSENCE”(※), and seminars about support for children with neurodevelopmental disorders.
2) Research
We research neurodevelopmental disorders clinically based on the epidemiologic method theory.
3) Planning prefectural policies
We make use of the outcome of the research for Kochi prefecture's measures for the physically or mentally handicapped.
※ESSENCE
ESSENCE is the acronym for “Early Symptomatic Syndromes Eliciting Neuropsychiatric/Neurodevelopmental Clinical Examinations”.
It is the concept which includes developmental disorders, mental retardation, tic disorder, epilepsy, and other Neurodevelopmental disorders which was advocated by Christopher Gillberg.
Christopher Gillberg M.D PhD
Born in 1950. He is engaged in research and education as a professor in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry. He has published over 830 international peer-reviewed papers (767 of which can currently be found on the NIH PubMed site and more than 400 of which deal with ASD) on autism, Asperger syndrome, ADHD, Tourette syndrome, intellectual disability, epilepsy, behavioural phenotype syndromes, depression, reactive attachment disorder, anorexia nervosa, and other areas relevant for children’s and adolescents’ mental and neurological health. These papers have also influenced international disease classifications such as the (※1) ICD and (※2)DSM. Based on his many years of clinical experience, he has written more than 36 books so far. They have been translated into many different languages and published worldwide. He has also received numerous prestigious awards for his research achievements. Currently, he supervises many researchers at (※3)GNC and other institutions.

It is known as an health care classification system published by the United Nations-sponsored World Health Organization.
(※2) DSM is the abbreviation of “The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders”.
It is standard criteria for the classification of mental disorders published by the American Psychiatric Association. It provides a common language and is used in the United States and in varying degrees around the world.
